2.7 The OT prophetic picture of the millennium …………………..

Our glorious hope, the coming reign and coming kingdom of Jesus Christ, on this very earth, is beautifully illustrated in a number of Old Testament prophecies. Starting at the book of Isaiah, and all the way to the last verse of Malachi, there is an expectancy of the coming Messiah, our savior King, the One who will initiate a world of peace and joy, of order and harmony.

This expectancy is summarized in some collated Old Testament listed verses below. For the full text version of these Millennial passages, click on OT millennial passages. In addition, to understand the timing of these prophecies, refer to for the historical background as per J.Hilburn (Cyrus_and_Darius_(Jason_Hilburn)

These Old Testament passages provide us with a glimpse of the Millennium by way of word-pictures, pictures that  stimulate the imagination and conjure up visual images of this coming new world.

These mind-pictures may be explored from twelve points of view:

  1. Jesus Messiah reigns as King
  2. The earth full of the knowledge of the Lord
  3. Jerusalem city of God
  4. Israel a place of peace
  5. Build cities, and inhabit them;
  6. They shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof :
  7. Israel restored, Eden-like conditions prevail

  9. The people of Israel.
  10. Israel admired by the nations.
  11. Gentile nations come to worship
  12. Geography: Cities, names, neighbors and boundaries.

The verses below are presented without commentary, savour them as God has given them to us:

Jesus Messiah reigns as King

And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one. Zech14:9

His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. Zech 9

And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Is 60:3

In that day shall the branch of the Lord be beautiful and glorious, Is 4:2

And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. Is 11:9

Know that I am the Lord your God, dwelling in Zion. Joel 3:17

Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain Zech 14:3

And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. Is 2:2 & Micah 4:1

 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Mic 4:2 & Is 2:3

The earth full of the knowledge of the Lord

For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Isaiah 11: 9

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace; that brings good tidings of good, that publishes salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigns, … Is 52:7

And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. Is 54:13

And he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Is 2:3

And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. Is 2:4

… and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. Is 52:10

Jerusalem city of God

Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her: ….For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: Is 66:10,12

Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken. 21 But there the glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams;….the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: Is 33:20-23

I will make thy foundations with sapphires, windows of agates, borders of pleasant stones Is 54:12

For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burns…..keep not silence & give no rest, till he establish, and make Jerusalem a praise in the earth. Is 62:1,6

And the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence 6 And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the day time from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain. Is 4:5-6

And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited. Zech 14:11

 …then shall Jerusalem be holy Joel 3

Israel a place of peace and purity

And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.  And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children’s children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever. Ez 37:24,25

 But they shall serve the Lord their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them. Jer 30:9

39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. Jer 32:39-40

And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.  And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you  Ez 36:27-32

Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise…….. 60:22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time. Is 60:18,22

19 And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.20 Their children also shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established before me, and I will punish all that oppress them.21 And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the Lord. Jer 30:21

And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore Ez 37:38

They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. Is 49:10

The glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams; Isaiah 33:21

Build cities, and inhabit them

Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it Ez 36:36

In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: {9:12} That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, says the LORD that dos this. Amos 9:11-12

And they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; Amos 9:14

And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee. Is 60:10

In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be built Ez 36:33

The streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. Zech 8

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places, Is 32:18

In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.2 Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keeps the truth may enter in… 8 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. Is 26:1-8

They shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof

And they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens and eat the fruit of them. {9:15} And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, says the LORD thy God. Amos 9:14,15

Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the Lord our God. Jer 31:5-6

Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that sows seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. Amos 9:13

24 And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities thereof together, husbandmen, and they that go forth with flocks.25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul. Jer 31:24

And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by. Ez 36:34

Them that come of Jacob will take root: Israel shall blossom and bud Isaiah 27:6

In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.17 For thus saith the Lord; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually. Jer 33:16-18

Israel restored, Eden-like conditions prevail

The mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, Joel 3

And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited.  Ez 36:35.

… and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.: Is 4:2

The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them Isaiah 11: 6

And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. Isaiah 11: 8

There shall be no more then an infant, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: Is 65

The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock:  Is 65

And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; …9 No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: Is 35:8,9

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. Is 35:5,6

41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.42 For thus saith the Lord; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them. Jer 32:39-42

Dead Sea water healed: Fish and trees in abundance.

Living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half toward the hinder sea,  in summer and in winter shall it be. Zech 14:8

“Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed…. Ez 47:8

And it shall come to pass, that every thing that lives, which moves, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh. Ez 47:9

And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from Engedi even unto Eneglaim; ….Ez 47:10

And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees….and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine” Ez 47:12

The people of Israel.

In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. Zech 13:1

22 And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. Jer 30:19-22

The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry. Jer 31:3-4

Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations. Is 60:15

And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed. Is 61:9

Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, …. to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee Is 49:7

In that day shall the branch of the Lord be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel. Is 4:2

And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Is 35:10

Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; Is 43:5, Zech 8

Thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. Is 54:13

My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart. Is 59:21

11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the Lord of hosts: for the Lord is good; for his mercy endures for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. Jer 33:11

Will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD Zeph 3:9

But ye shall be named the Priests of the Lord: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves Is 61:6

All nations seek the Lord of Israel.

For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.19 And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, ….afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles. Is 66:18-19

Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD., Zech 8:22

And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Is 2:3

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you. Zech 8:23

The abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee. The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; Isaiah 60:5,6a

And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed.Is 61:9

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Is 11:9

Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. Is 60:11

For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted. Is 60:12

Worship of the Lord at Jerusalem

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem. Is 27:13

And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord. Is 66:23

All they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall show forth the praises of the LORD. Isaiah 60:6b

To bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee. Is 60:9

And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it. Jer 33:9

Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the Lord. Jer 31:12-14

The Gentile nations will keep the feast of tabernacles in the millennial kingdom as follows:

“And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. ..And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. Zechariah 14:16-19

Geography: Cities, names, neighbours and boundaries.

Names of the gates of Jerusalem are the 12 tribes : Ez 48:31-35

All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin’s gate unto the place of the first gate.. Zech 14:10

And the Lord shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the Lord in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto the Lord, and perform it.22 And the Lord shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the Lord, and he shall be intreated of them, and shall heal them. Isaiah 19:21-22

In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians. Isaiah 19:23

In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:25 Whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance. Isaiah 19:21-25
