Jesus’s second coming.

There is a sense of expectancy throughout the prophetic books of the Old Testament  describing the coming of the Lord Messiah to reign on this earth. Every Jewish child was taught about the messiah to come. He was to be the glorious and mighty ruler over the whole earth, ruling with a rod of iron, ensuring peace and prosperity for all and ensuring swift judgement on anyone with evil intent. His kingdom will last forever.

The disciples had this in mind when they asked Jesus about His second coming on the mount of Olives. Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming,…” (Matt 24:3)

New Testament verses:

This expectation of the coming Messiah is now fleshed out, extended and clarified by Jesus and the writings of the apostles in the New Testament:

  • Matt 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shines even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
  • Matt 24:30 …then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
  • Mark 14: 61b-62 Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Firstly Jesus explains that his coming will be visible, and impossible for anyone on earth to miss. This is confirmed by John in Revelation.

  • Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

In the period of time just before his second coming, whilst Christians are being encouraged to watch and be ready, many will nevertheless be skeptical.

  • Matt 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh
  • Matt 24:46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
  • 2 Peter 3: 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

There will be much trouble for believers in this world, but Jesus has prepared an eternal dwelling for us where we can be safe and content with Him forever.

  • John 14: 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
